Physical appearance
The Tiger’s Eye Walnut tree grows to a height between 75-100 feet. The trunk has a diameter of 3 feet. The tree’s sapwood is dull gray with a yellowish pallor. The heartwood is pale yellowish-brown to medium brown, sometimes has a reddish hue, and exhibits dark gray to black striping, giving the heartwood the nickname ‘Tiger’s Eye.’
Flooring Properties
Tiger's Eye Walnut is a beautiful wood with tan-brown background with fine black striping. The wood’s texture is fine and even and has a straight or interlocked grain. Though hard and heavy, Tiger’s Eye Walnut works well with hand and machine tools. However, the presence of gum pockets interferes with sawing and other working procedures. Tiger's Eye Walnut will darken over time from a golden brown to a darker brown under the black striping.
