Wood Species
Sucupira
Biological name
Bowdichia Nitida
Originates from or commonly found in
Brazil, Venezuela, Guyana, Surinam and French Guiana.
Physical appearance
Sucupira trees average from medium to tall, up to 90-150 feet, with 2-4 foot diameters. The tree is covered by hard, yellowish bark. It has whitish or yellowish sapwood. The heartwood is light, grayish-brown with fine lighter stripes.
Flooring Properties
Hard, heavy, durable Sucupira is an ideal wood for flooring. It has a straight to slightly interlocked or slightly wavy grain. Getting the finished product is not easy as the wood is hard to dry and difficult to work. The interlocked grain offers substantial resistance to cutting. It does turn and glue well, however. An unusual attribute for Sucupira wood opposed to most hardwood imports is that this species will lighten in color over time.
Janka rating
Sucupira has hardness rating of 1980.
