Physical appearance
The Silky Ash tree can reach variable eights between 30-50 feet. The tree bark is gray with clear vertical fissures. The leaves are evergreen, alternate and elliptical. The fruit is long and roughly conical. A central plug drops out at maturity, releasing the winged seeds to be dispersed by wind. The sapwood and heartwood are a similar whitish color, an unusual attribute.
Flooring Properties
Silky Ash is a pale straw-tan colored hardwood with medium graining. It can be worked either by hand or with machine tools. It sands well and can reach a nice finish. Silky Ash exhibits a medium degree of color change to a slightly darker tan color over time.
