What is a satin floor finish?

Satin floor finish -- do you want it?

Most hardwood floors and laminates, too, have a satin floor finish. It is also a common type of finish for paint. Not high gloss and not matte, a satin finish seems to be appropriate for a lot of areas in your home. A satin floor finish will let your flooring material be seen, yet not scream out at you. A high gloss finish is great for athletic surfaces or an urban lifestyle but a satin floor finish looks good in a period or contemporary home. Old or antique looking floors are probably best with a satin finish on them. A satin floor finish is subtle and looks great over old wood floors.

Areas where it will look good in your home

A satin floor finish will be good on wood surfaces and even in the kitchen. You may go for the high gloss diner look, but satin finish is great for wood floors or other surfaces. If you have a solid surface in a playroom or family room then a satin floor finish will be durable and not show scuffs from active use of the space. In a bedroom you want the decor to be peaceful and serene. A satin floor finish will work there also. The paint in a bedroom may be matte finish but it can also be satin, because in paint, this is a good surface to have. A satin finish subtly reflects the light. A satin floor finish would be a good choice if you are uncertain whether you want a gloss or matte finish to your floor, because it's somewhere in between in light reflectivity. If you are really unsure about what type of floor finish to use, trying out the basic three types on a spare piece of flooring and then taking it over to that room so you can look at it in the correct light, may help you to decide. Small cans and bottles of finishes are usually available for most products.
