Is my kitchen a green kitchen? Is my kitchen healthy?
What Can A Healthier Kitchen Mean?
Less sickness transmitted by germs found on countertops, appliances and floors, plus a more eco-friendly room, and a more natural and beautiful one, too. That's what a healthier kitchen can mean. Surfaces in today's kitchens are many and varied and their absorbency is a key factor in keeping your family healthier. How much you can clean kitchen surfaces and how much they may absorb food, liquids and odors, is a big thing in deciding what you will use in a home project. Gone are the days where a laminate top could get scratched and be a receptacle for millions of bacteria. Today's preference in countertops is granite, because of its beauty, different looks and colors, and the ability to keep it spotless. Forged in the heat of the earth, it is resistant to heat and cold itself, feels good to the touch, is extremely attractive and is easy to wipe off and disinfect. Food and liquids get dropped often onto your kitchen floor so that too, has to be taken into consideration. Hardwood Flooring, laminate, Ceramic Tiles, stone tiles, vinyl and even linoleum are all great materials to use on a kitchen floor. One piece materials are good, but if tiles are grouted and sealed well (including the grout), and maintained properly, then they are also a healthy choice for your floors.
Things To Make Your Kitchen Healthier.
Materials used in places where food is prepared should be non-absorbent of course, but also be as natural as they can be with no surface treatments or chemicals to come off in the food itself. Wiping surfaces with as natural a disinfectant as you can, will go a long way in preventing bacteria from making their home on your countertops and floors. Change your kitchen sponge and towel daily if you can. There is no need to throw them away, just use a couple in rotation and clean the other one so it's ready for duty. Sweep your floors of any spills or debris and spot clean food or liquid which has been tracked in or dropped during cooking. Clean backsplashes often, especially over your stove because that area may be forgotten. It is a breeding ground for bacteria because of the heat from the oven. If you have hardwood floors in your kitchen, and many period or modern homes do, they can be cleaned daily with a damp mop and warm water and vinegar. This gives the wood a lovely shine and also cleans it without use of chemicals, making it much healthier.
How To Keep Your Kitchen Healthier.
If you have a hand in either building or renovating your kitchen, look around for the safest materials, and most eco-friendly ones, in this crucial food prep area. Make sure they can be cleaned properly. Maintain your flooring no matter what it is and check under the cabinet overhangs (close to the floor) to make sure any debris is removed. Try and use natural cleaning materials if possible, and checking online for this info will help. Start out with high quality materials, make sure they are installed properly, and you will do all right
