What is a semi gloss floor finish?
Why gloss floor finish?
Want a shine so deep and rich that you can see yourself in it? Then a gloss floor finish is for you. Most people may recognize a high gloss finish on Gymnasium Flooring or a basketball court. A high gloss brings out the colors or patterns underneath it because there is a depth to the look. High gloss usually comes from a Polyurethane compound application. Of course, not all looks or materials on your floors are suitable for a high gloss finish. In a library or den for instance, you don't want lights shining off the floor like a thousand watt laser beam, as you are trying to read. If there is a subtle pattern to your floor then a high gloss finish will bring that out. High gloss floors are durable. For cleaning instructions you can see the can or bottle if you applied it yourself, but if a pro installed and finished your floors, then they will let you know how to take care of them. Think of photos when you are considering a high gloss finish. The glossy ones are much richer while the satin or matte finished ones are subtle.
Where it is used the most
Often used over a black floor in an urban home or loft, or in the lobbies of commercial buildings, a gloss floor finish always seems to add a touch of elegance. Of course, they are popular on athletic courts, and you can see the logos and wood floors underneath if you watch a game on TV or in person. When deciding on the finish for the floors in your home, it's best to look at good photos or even samples of a high gloss (and others) applied to the product you want protected. If still unsure, you can always do a small test piece of the flooring with the high gloss finish to see how it will look. Only a high gloss finish can bring out the depth of floor surfaces.
Get it off and put it back on
If you want or need to refresh your gloss floor finish it's best to strip it off first, sand if necessary, replace the finish and then buff when dry. All manufacturers will have instructions on the can or website and you can rent machines to do the work for you. Depending on what flooring you have down will determine exactly which type of high gloss finish you need to buy. For those people sensitive to chemicals, a manufacturer can supply any answers you care to ask. You can also take a look at their website and the FAQ section. High gloss finishes can be made in several ways so it's pretty easy to find one right for you and your application.
