What Are Encaustic Tiles? Can they be used for flooring?
What materials are encaustic tiles made of?
They are inlaid tiles, rather than painted or glazed ones. Materials may consist of two or more colors of clay (these days it can be cement), in varying thicknesses up to a quarter inch. The pattern does not wear off and in most cases, can last as long as the tile. They have been around for hundreds of years. Main production of these types of tiles was in England, although their use spread across Europe during the Reformation. Encaustic tiles were mostly used in churches although that kind of design was sometimes used in private homes. They were made in the U.S. in the 19th century and of course, are still manufactured here and elsewhere today. In the United States these tiles can be referred to as Cuban tiles, and elsewhere they may be known as Hydraulic or Mosaicos Hidraulicos. In today's era, encaustic tiles are made from cement and are a very green product. They are created from simple earth components and using a many centuries old method. Natural pigments are used and these tiles do not "off gas" at all. They are simply made by hand (usually) and use little other than human energy to produce.
Advantage of Using Encaustic Tiles
Encaustic tiles are enduring and beautiful and they have a history that goes way back. That history is showcased in warmer climates in particular as the colors run deep and true and they are usually handcrafted. They are durable and look great even if used in a high traffic entryway. Latin American countries in particular is where you may see a lot of this style of cement or clay tile. If you are on holiday or vacation in warm country, many villages have craftspeople who will make these tiles and you can bring a few back to be the centerpiece of a newly tiled area in your home. They are becoming more and more popular because of their handcrafted look and feel under your feet, their beauty, and their earth friendliness. Once purchased and installed, they will last a very long time. They could even outlast your home or building.
Where Can You Use encaustic tiles?
These kinds of tiles would look superb in an enclosed courtyard, in your kitchen, even in a pool area. The depth of these encaustic tiles lends a real beauty to them and the design will not get worn off, such as painted tiles can sometimes get. Tiles can be glazed or unglazed. Manufacturers may allow you to choose your own colors and patterns. Encaustic tiles are also great for waterfront homes, both residential and commercial buildings, and anywhere inland that you might care to use them/.
