What materials are eco-friendly flooring?

What is FSC certification?

Many materials used in flooring can be considered eco-friendly, and if you are concerned about this aspect of your new flooring, look for products with a tag that shows they have been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council. With wood, trees that are not harvested in a responsible way can damage fragile eco systems, especially in rain forests. Land denuded of trees, on hilltops and hill and mountain sides in particular, causes rain to flow down and further strip the soil of nutrients and where little vegetation grows, a lot of species can disappear. Many unique mammals, reptiles, birds, insects and plants rely on certain habitats and when they are gone, often, so go those animal and plant species. A lot of trees are highly renewable and if managed by local people in a good way, this provides decent work and pay and is the source for beautiful product for your floors.

Is bamboo flooring eco-friendly?

Is formalehyde eco-friendly?

Bamboo_Flooring is an incredibly growing species of grass and needs little fertilizer or pesticides, hence lowering its impact on the environment when grown for flooring and other uses (such as [Panda food]). It can provide excellent income for people in rural areas. Formaldehyde is sometimes used in the manufacture of bamboo flooring (for binding the strips), so check for low emission levels. Cork actually comes from the bark of the self-named cork tree, and it's renewable. It is a favorite for those suffering from allergies and when sealed, lends a handcrafted and unique look to any floor. A natural cork is best for an eco-friendly product and look for the flooring without a PVC backing.

Are concrete countertops eco-friendly?

Concrete is the new granite, in a way. There can be countertops made from concrete and when sealed it is extremely durable, and used as flooring, also wears well and lasts for a very long time. Outside or inside your home, concrete can be stained (while still being mixed), then stamped for an attractive and inexpensive way to give the look of pavers or stone tiles. If you get a crack in it, just mix up a small batch and apply like a Band-Aid. Linoleum is enjoying a new life as a flooring choice. It is durable, fairly inexpensive and today's linoleum products are made from natural materials and are biodegradable. Many patterns are available now, so you won't be stuck with an old-fashioned look (unless you want that, of course).

What rugs and carpet are eco-friendly?

There are multiple choices for rugs and Carpet available, and a lot of them are made from natural materials such as wool, cotton, sisal, sea grass, jute, and coir (which is cocoanut husks). Avoid carpets and rugs which have been treated with chemical stain repellents as they can emit chemicals which should be avoided by people with intolerance to artificial products and their odors. Some materials used for floor coverings have better stain repellency than others, so study which ones may be more suitable for your use or uses, and where they are to be placed. Locally woven carpets and rugs by ethnic minorities are sometimes a good choice as they can provide needed economic boosts to the people weaving them. A good source for checking out all of the possibilities is online, and it will save you a whole lot of walking around in crowded warehouse-like stores.
