Countertops -- The Essential Kitchen Item.

Do I have to match my countertop with my floor?

Without countertops, of course, everything would fall to the kitchen cabinets or floor below. Without sealed countertops that provide a clean and non-porous surface, preparing food in the kitchen could become hazardous due to old food and bacteria buildup. And then, there is mold. Mold occurs where there's dampness and heat. And of course, in the kitchen, there's a lot of that in place. A solid countertop and backsplash (well grouted and sealed) is needed to provide a safe and healthy environment for your family. Any type of countertop that develops cracks should also be repaired. Cracks are little hiding places for bacteria.

What Are They Made From?

Oddly enough, a lot of countertops can be made from the same materials used in your floors. There are no sharp instruments used on your floors of course, and hopefully not much food on them either, but both areas are subjected to heat and cold and dampness and sticky substances. Both have to be kept clean and free from bacteria. Both have to be attractive and safe, with sealed surfaces and no holes or splinters to damage family fingers (or feet). Granite is a popular material for both countertops and tiled floors. Another great option (because they come in many different colors) are ceramic tiles. Ceramic Tiles can often be put in or on by the homeowner. It depends on your level of expertise and if you feel unsure about your ability, there are great pros out there who will help. Countertops and floors can also be made from wood. Proper care is needed for countertops (such as butcher block) in order to protect both the countertop and your family from germs and damage. Often, a natural mineral oil sealer is all the care required. For safety reasons, check with a professional countertop or wood specialist for pointers and help. Limestone may not be appropriate for countertops as it's absorbent, but marble often is. Although gorgeous, marble can be expensive, both for your floors and used as a countertop in your kitchen.

What's Best For You.

Countertops can be used many hours of the day, or not at all. It depends on how much cooking is done by family members. If you buy an old home, with plans to renovate, then study the usage your kitchen will have before you decide upon any countertop material. Possibly granite (solid slab) is the most popular choice in this millennium and along with stainless steel appliances and usually darker wood cabinets, it can look great. Matching your granite countertops with your flooring (is granite tiles are used there) can either work for or against you. You don't want your kitchen to look like a cave. Well, if you do. ceramic or natural stone tiles can be used on your countertops, real or fake rocks as a backsplash, and natural stone tiles on your kitchen floor. So, cave or no cave -- you decide. In any case, countertops can define the look of your kitchen, so check out and compare samples side by side. Doing this all online will save a lot of stress, so find a great flooring and countertop professional site, and then all you will need to do is look forward to your new kitchen.
