Carpeting is one of the most popular flooring choices of the many different options that are currently available. Carpeting has several major advantages over other types of flooring as it is more comfortable, quiet, well-insulated, and comes in many different varieties and colors. Carpeting has been around for quite some time, though they didn't really become popular until the early 1700's and were originally hand-woven works of art. Today, however, carpeting is manufactured mainly from synthetic fibers, which are more durable.

Many different types of carpets are made primarily of wool and synthetic fibers, though other common materials that carpets are made out of include acrylic, which is most like wool in its construction, though the toughest material by far is nylon, which is also a synthetic material. Nylon is one of the most popular materials for carpet manufacturing due mainly to its low cost and low maintenance, as it is quite easy to clean. However, nylon is prone to what is known as "pilling", when small tufts of nylon pull off the carpet.

Carpets also require some kind of underlayment to preserve the life of the carpet, and the most common and durable material is foam. Foam underlayment helps to insulate heat as well as reduce noise. When shopping for good carpet and good underlayment, make sure that you choose a durable carpet and a foam underlayment that is not too soft, as it can present walking hazards due to its soft material.
