What is a bamboo flooring filet?
Bamboo filets are exactly what you might think they are -- just like fish filets. The outer skin of the bamboo pole, once it's harvested, is removed and slices are taken from the stick. As the outer edges of these filets are milled, it flattens the strips and makes them suitable for the creation of lovely bamboo flooring. Not much is wasted in this process and excess strands of bamboo created are used in another type of flooring called strand-woven bamboo flooring. Bamboo "forests" are grown in China and area farmers are entitled to work the land as a sort of commercial enterprise, even though they do not actually own the land.
Is bamboo flooring kiln dried?
After harvesting, the filets are dried in an oven or kiln, then boiled. After this process they are ready to be made into either vertical or horizontal bamboo flooring. The vertical kind, more unusual than the standard horizontal type, produces a more varied pattern as the rings are smaller and there are many more actual strips shown in each plank, and the lines in between the strips are narrow. After the glue has dried the planks undergo a final compression process and this makes them ready to go, as soon as the tongue and groove parts are created. This will make them as easy as regular wood or laminate floors to install (if you are handy at that sort of thing).
What is the difference between vertical and horizontal bamboo flooring?
If the flooring being made is of the vertical type, then the filets are bound with the narrow edges facing upwards. If more traditional looking flooring (the horizontal type similar to any hardwood) is created, then the broader side is used. In the horizontal variety, ring patterns are more in evidence. In the vertical type, it's feature is the decorative narrow lines in between the bound strips. Because of the almost 100% usage of bamboo during the making of flooring, it is a sustainable and rapidly renewable resource. Giant bamboo can grow several feet in one day.
Is bamboo flooring eco-friendly?
Giant Pandas use bamboo as their main food source, and sometimes exclusively.. They prefer favorite types and patches of the bamboo at different times of the year. If some of these special patches go down for any reason, the Giant Pandas may starve. Bamboo groves used for flooring are usually farmed and not in any Giant Panda areas. Using this giant species of grass as your flooring is a sound ecological choice, and it is available in a variety of hues and styles to suit whatever decor you want.. If you are unhandy at anything like installation of flooring, then there are professional companies out there who can help you both select the right type of flooring for your situation, and also help you install it, or install it for you.
